In Unit Three it is worth 30% of your mark for classwork and in Unit Four it is worth 50% of your mark for classwork. (remember that the classwork for the year adds up to a total of 50% of your mark and the examination is worth another 50%)

What does it mean to encounter conflict? This is the key question that you will be grappling with while reading your texts and creating your own writing. In unit three we will be reading Secret River and in unit four The Crucible. The Context is a new area of study in VCE English and allows you lots of opportunities to practice the craft of writing. You will explore different genres and write for different audiences and your writing will sit in various contexts. You can be creative here and really extend your repertoire of writing styles. We will engage with the key idea of 'Encountering Conflict' thoughout and will be looking at various ways that writers have dealt with what it is to encounter conflict. Consider the types of conflict that humans have experienced and you will come up with a very broad list indeed. One of the first tasks we will do is to mindmap the idea and extend our understanding of it. This will give us material to use in our own writing.
Here is a review of Secret River to get you started and here is some material for The Crucible from Spark Notes. Here is a website provided by a teacher that has put in lots of work on this text.
You must make sure that you have read 'Secret River' before you come to class to begin discussing the Context. We will not have class time to read and once your learning in this area begins we will have very little time to catch up on reading.
Stay tuned for more activities and discussion on this area of study.
