This is your language lab. It is a place where you can find information about writing and responding to writing. You will find this useful for all areas of study. You will find information about literary techniques and persuasive techniques.

Check in regularly for information that will help you to write more clearly and effectively.

You have been given the SAC task before the holidays and you should be working on it over the term break. You must present your oral presentation in week one on an issue of your choice. Remember that you were supposed to have indicated to your teacher what your topic was and then you were to research this thoroughly. Make sure that you know the issue well before you begin to prepare your presentation.

You have been given a step by step guide to help you in this. If you fill in the details every step of the way you should be able to feel confident that you know your issue well and you are ready to present. If you have missed out steps along the way the end result will be patchy. The process is very important here and if you do not take time to follow the procedure carefully then you will have missed things and it will lower your mark in the end.

Those students who showed me their work on the holidays will definitely have a head start as they have taken the opportunity to improve based on the feedback. Make the most of your teacher's help this year as next year you're on your own!

The file that was handed out is available here.ISSUES ORAL SAC - COVER SHEET.docx

Make sure that you use persuasive language in your presentation, that's what this is all about. Do you have some facts and statistics? Can you use emotive language or appeals? What tone do you think you will use? These (and more) are things you should consider in order to give yourself the best possible chance of success.

Analysis of persuasive texts.

This section of the Area of Study is also worth 20% so you will need to practice it and make sure that you are completely aware of the requirements. Your Oxford textbook 'Using Language to Persuade' will have some very relevant information on this and some activities to complete from page 45 onwards. Work through the activities on persuasive language so that you are revising your knowledge of this area.

UNIT 3 - LANGUAGE ANALYSIS.docx

The above file will give you an overview of what you will be learning throughout this part of the Area of Study. Please familiarise yourselves with it. Also make sure that you keep a media file on all of the articles to do with our issue.

Remember we are doing the issue of 'Should we be dredging Port Phillip  Bay?' Look at the echo online page for an overview of the issue. You will also need to familiarise yourself with The Age page for this issue, this is a multimedia page with very useful background information as well as links to key stakeholders like Blue Wedges.

 HOW TO:

You must keep in mind the fact that when you do a language analysis (and you will be doing a comparitive analysis) you are not playing 'spot the persuasive technique'. The real key is making sure that you discuss what the writer(or film maker) is doing and how they are persuading their target audience. You must think carefully about the tone and whether or not it changes, think also about any appeals that are being used as these are clues to the target audience.

The adjectives used are crucial in determining the author's style as well. Do they frequently use words like 'pristine' and 'precious' when referring to Port Phillip Bay? If so what does that tell you?

while all of this sounds obvious you really need to keep it in your mind when you are writing your analysis.

We will be doing the SAC in week four and you will have one single lesson to read and annotate your three articles and then a double lesson to write it all up. Remember to use all of the time you are given. Those of you who are finished early are usually disappointed with your results. Make sure that you read all instructions carefully and compare carefully. One way to write this up is to write your introduction as per usual with an overview of the issue and an introduction to each article including the name of the author, the newspaper or magazine and the date of publication. Then the next three paragraphs could be used to write an analysis of each article including the main techniques used and the ways in which this persuades the reader. Then in paragraphs four and five compare and contrast all articles highlighting the main ways that they differ from each other or perhaps the way that they are similar. You would then write your conclusion as normal.
